tai chi attempt #1

Today I attempted to go to the gym for a Tai Chi class. I find Tai Chi fascinating… but yet, I’m always so curious why I never see anyone under the age of 65 doing it??* I’ve been wanting to try it for some time and thought today could be the day!!

But it wasn’t.

The class started at 10:45am. I made it to the gym on time, checked in the kids and left Little Miss crying while I ran off to do the class. Now normally, she’s so easy going – everyone, and I mean EVERYONE always comments on how she is so smiley and happy. Apparently, today she could only be happy if I was touching her – or at the very least – in close proximity to her. I figured she would stop crying after a few minutes. Nope. I was so wrong on that one.

I was trying to be discreet in the class, knowing the chances of being called out. However, the cute little Chinese lady instructing the class made me stand in the middle of the room, “You new. You stand here in middle so you can learn. Watch and try.” I of course did most everything backwards. I am TERRIBLE at following these sorts of things!! By 11:10, I had been called from the class twice – once to change a diaper and once for Little Miss crying. The first time, at least I noticed the staff person trying to get my attention. The second time, they had to call my name. Nothing like screwing up the zen-ness of the room.

I tried my best to tempt Little Miss with all the cool toys. She would laugh and play… until she noticed me inching away from her. Then all hell would break loose. Her screams are pretty loud for someone so tiny. She was all like “No ‘effing way are you leaving me here Momma”. She’s such a tough girl sometimes.

At any rate, by 11:20 I was back in the van driving home. The tiny bit of Tai Chi I got to experience was pretty neat. I really liked watching the instructor – so fluid & graceful. Even though I was terrible at it, I enjoyed it. All 13 minutes of it.

* I was by far the youngest person in the class. The next youngest person was in his mid-50s. I didn’t care though, I still think it’s cool.

Well, you tried and that's a big part. I mean it's hard to leave the baby and hard to entrust her to someone but you gave it a try. Just make sure you try again. You know?

  2. So I have got to ask this…why did they have you come change a diaper? Can they not do that, or are they not allowed to? I am just curious. I thought most child care places just did it. But I have never taken my child to a gym child care, so I have no idea! But at least you got to experience something new!!

  3. Our gym doesn't change diapers either. I guess since there is only 1 worker they don't want to be distracted by changing a diaper. I have never asked. Way to go at least trying. It really is a nice relaxing work out if you can get through the whole thing.

  4. My little guy took tae kwon do for a few years, and at teh end of the year there was a big demonstration by all the different classes. The one I loved mot (other than his, of course) was the tai chi demonstration. And you're right, most of the class were in their fifties or more….So bizarre.I too have always found it beautiful and moving. Maybe I'll give his old school a call and find out if, at thirty nine, I'm too young to join…

Better luck next time. I'm proud of you for trying it.I hate being called out for diaper changes.I used to do stairs in the theater room at our gym (yes it was a theater and they had treadmills and steppers and LOTS of airconditioning) and I would watch the nursery lady walk around and whisper, interrupting everyone and then she'd get to me and say…are you Spencer/Cameron's mom. um ya !hated that. They only let you put 2 kids per adult in our gym's nursery. That's what comes with your membership. I used to take the older boys when Syd was in preschool. Now I am over by 2. Well 3 most days.
